From the (Feng and English tr.) Tao te Ching: "The sage is detached, thus at one with the world." Sect. 7.
The person with (even a moderate am't of) sagacity is detached. Yes we often say that. And this does NOT, when the detachment is correct, lead to painful isolation.
It allows the insightful one to avoid (many) difficulties. Conflicts. It is a kind of detachment which allows the person to see what _really_ is happening. And, indeed, NOT be detached on occasion.
With a grandchild, with an old dear friend. With a music perhaps. Need one be detached viewing a sunset?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
He is detached, thus at one with all.
